Waipa Economic Update

Brad Olsen - Economic Update of Waipa

On Friday, 2nd August, the Cambridge Chamber hosted an engaging session with Brad Olsen, CEO of Infometrics, who presented an in-depth analysis of the economic landscape of the Waipa region to 65 members. This event provided valuable insights into the current and future economic conditions affecting our community.

Key Regional Economic Insights

Brad delved into key regional economic trends, providing members with a comprehensive understanding of the Waipa economy's dynamics. Here are some of the critical points discussed:

Greener Shoots in 2025?

The economic outlook suggests potential growth in 2025. However, inflation remains a concern, being too high and improving too slowly.

Economic Challenges

 - Businesses are facing prolonged hardships, especially in the primary sector, with a notable $24 million shortfall in payouts compared to the previous year.

 - While Q2 statistics show an increase in annual spending, capturing these clients initially remains challenging. Household activity was subdued, indicating continued restraint.

Primary Sector Issues

- One of the primary sector challenges highlighted was the $24 million shortfall in payouts compared to the previous year.

Spending and Investment Trends

- There was a 3.2% annual increase in spending in Q2 for the Waipa District, but it's important to note that business investment has been pulling back, with a 57% annual decrease in non-residential consent values.

Labour Market and Migration Trends

- Job advertisements are well below pre-pandemic levels, indicating ongoing pressures in the labour market.

- Migration patterns are shifting, with more foreign arrivals and increased departures of Kiwis.

 Housing Market

- The housing market in Waipa shows mixed signals, with a rise in sales but still low overall. House values increased by 4.2% in 2024, but housing activity remains subdued.

Brad Olsen is a highly regarded commentator, focusing on current and emerging trends in regional economies. His insights provide valuable guidance for businesses and policymakers in navigating the economic landscape.

These insights are crucial for our members to understand the economic forces at play and to strategise for future growth and resilience.
